THE END IS NEAR!!
Daisy Mayday X Katoomba Tees
Katoomba Artist ‘Daisy Mayday’ (@daisymayday_artist) so often hears comments about her character ‘Daisy’ looking like a Teletubbie or the Wild Things Kid, or a Care Bear - it‘s now inspired a T-Shirt design!
“I realised these characters belong in decades/generational associations and overlaid a concept based on the evolution (ape-to-man) image. Seeing an evolution of bearlike characters which represent our society and the messaging to children over time, adding the Grateful Dead bear as a nod to the 70s free love and drugs that influenced children’s television (think HR Puff n Stuf) into the 80s and Care Bears, wholesome care and kindness, among the rise of cartoon merchandise and consumerism,” she explains.
“By the 90s, the very brief disestablishmentarianism of the grunge scene is represented by the Wild Things, and followed by the Teletubbie representing the rise of the internet, juxtaposed with the pre-internet ‘no signal’ logo to emphasis the lack of connection in this instant - endless content. Daisy is transcending the capitalist degradation, superficial notions of love and disconnection.”

BRINGING BEARS TO LIFE!
The design of the shirt was brought to life during a collaboration with Katoomba Tees illustrator Lucy Bell.
Lucy says: “As designer, I had to alter my style of drawing five times, surprisingly, Daisy was the hardest to perfect, being the most vital bear in the history of bears.”

During the process there were multiple colour changes in the bears, Grumpy Bear from Care Bears was originally green (Lucky Bear) and chipper but the story of the evolution of enlightenment and connection to others in love through time meant we had to kick out luck and embrace good old grump.
“When I finished the Teletubbie I only got this stark, shocked expression from people followed by them saying "that's great!" and felt very successful. Having my touch in the design means I'll notice details no one else will, like individually tapered lines, altered colours and the time spent staring into the eyes of Teletubbies that will haunt me forever!”
ABOUT DAISY
Daisy has been a productive cartoon since 2014, published in journals, collaborative projects, murals, exhibitions and street stickers all around the world. Daisy came from the Pleaides star constellation to help humanity get back on track from the impact of neo-liberal capitalism. In 2018 all Daisy social media sites were deleted, with a tepid return to Instagram in 2020 and fb in 2022. The ‘Daisyverse’ has become a complex network of characters and philosophies which will be launched into the world in the fullness of time.
